Gamma Linoleic Acid (GLA) and Weight Loss

Ann Louise Gittleman, PhD, CNS, and author of the New York Times bestseller “the Fat Flush diet”, was recently interviewed about the latest update to her previous work and offered five insights into why many of us struggle to lose weight.    

Part 1 of 5- Gamma Linoleic Acid (GLA) and Weight Loss. 

“Dr. Gittleman is quick to point out that we need to avoid heavily processed foods that contain cheap, rancid, highly refined (and usually genetically modified) inflammation-producing vegetable oils, which are also omega-6 fats.”

She suggests not only increasing our consumption of heart healthy omega-3 fatty acids, but to also include gamma linoleic acid (GLA), which she states is an omega-6 and a secret rock star in the weight-loss world.

What factors can serve to create a deficit of GLA?  “GLA conversion can be compromised by overconsumption of sugar and refined grains, insulin resistance, thyroid or pituitary problems, overeating, vegan diets, protein and vitamin deficiencies, stress and other factors.”

How can GLA help improve health & weight loss?  GLA is known to have anti-inflammatory properties; in women, may help relieve symptoms associated with PMS, and from the standpoint of metabolism has shown to stimulate “brown fat”, very metabolically active tissue.

What are the best natural sources?  Dr. Gittleman is a fan of both borage oil and black currant oil.
